The History of Embroidery

For Royalty Only
Embroidery has been around since ancient times. It was once treasured and rare. Egyptians, Chinese, Russians and Germans all decorated fabrics with embroidery. Embroiderers in ancient times were considered masters and often compared to famous painters and artists of their day.

They decorated the robes of kings and queens from very long ago. Embroidery masters were often commissioned to create tapestries or even family portraits of nobles and royalty. Back in those days, it was all done by hand, and made only for the rich, the mighty and royalty.

Mechanized, then computerized
At the turn of the 19th century embroidery became mechanized. It could now be mass produced to some degree but it was very expensive and only large companies and wealthy people could afford this luxury. In 1972 the invention of the microchip revolutionized computers and paved the way for the computerization of the embroidery industry. In 1977 the first computerized embroidery machine was introduced. This made embroidery more affordable than ever before.

A blossoming industry
Since then the embroidery industry has blossomed and technology has progressed rapidly. As an artistic medium, embroidery is so versatile that anything that can be imagined can be reproduced on an embroidery machine. Embroidery is established in the fashion industry and used to decorate everything from elaborate women's evening gowns to a simple monogram as personalization. It is very commonly used as corporate identification on clothing because of it's prestige.

Today embroidery is done by amazing computer controlled machines that are capable of doing in minutes what used to take months or even years of painstaking work by hand.
